The best lagoons to visit in Lençóis Maranhenses

There is a moment, atop a dune, when the horizon opens up and water appears where it shouldn’t exist. That is how the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses reveal themselves to those setting off from Atins: a white desert dotted with freshwater lagoons, each with its own color, shape, and silence.

The largest dune field in South America and a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site since 2024, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park preserves thousands of rain-fed lagoons across its 155,000 hectares of sand. And few bases offer access as direct to this spectacle as Atins, the village at the mouth of the Preguiças River where the park meets the ocean. Here, the lagoons are not a distant destination—they are the landscape that begins just twenty minutes from your doorstep.

A desert that fills with water

The lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses are born from the rain. Between January and May, water accumulates in the valleys between the dunes, forming natural pools that reach their peak between May and September, displaying shades ranging from transparent blue to emerald green. From October onwards, many begin to dry up, and the landscape transforms once again.

This cycle makes every visit a unique experience. No season repeats the last: lagoons change their shape, gain new neighbors, and sometimes disappear only to be reborn in another part of the park. That is why the itineraries departing from Atins are not fixed. Local guides, who know the dunes like few others, choose each day’s route based on the fullest and most beautiful lagoons at that moment.

Canto de Atins Circuit: the seaside lagoons

Canto de Atins is the most classic excursion for those staying in the village. In about twenty minutes by 4×4 vehicle, or an hour’s walk for those up for it, you reach one of the most unique settings in Lençóis: lagoons nestled in the dunes right near the ocean edge.

Lagoa do Gavião

One of the largest in the circuit, with deep waters and high surrounding dunes. Ideal for your first long swim in Lençóis.

Lagoa da Gaivota

Calm, clear waters that form natural pools perfect for floating effortlessly, with the sea breeze in the background.

Lagoa Maria Vitória

Less crowded, it’s the choice for those seeking quiet. In the late afternoon, the reflection of the dunes on the water makes for the best photos.

Lagoa das Sete Mulheres

A traditional sunset spot. From the top of the dunes surrounding it, watching dusk settle over the lagoon field is a ritual in itself.

The tour can be done in the morning, returning in time for lunch, or in the afternoon, finishing with the sunset over the dunes. During the rainy season, depending on the tide, the itinerary may also include the small Cachoeira do Bonzinho, a trickling freshwater stream flowing through the sands.

“We arrived at Lagoa do Gavião in the late afternoon and had the place practically to ourselves. The warm water, the dunes changing color, and that absolute silence. It was the most beautiful moment of our trip to Brazil.” Juliana S., guest at Atins Charme Chalés

Ponta do Mangue Circuit: the oasis beyond the mangroves

The second major itinerary departing from Atins heading in the opposite direction crosses the mangrove forest before reaching the dunes at the far eastern end of the park. The crossing is part of the charm: in just a few kilometers, the landscape shifts from the dense green of the mangroves to the stark white of the sand. Along this stretch, the vehicle parks very close to the lagoons, making the circuit comfortable even for those traveling with children or preferring short walks.

Lagoa Tropical

The most famous around Atins. Blue, crystal-clear, and surrounded by high dunes for taking in the vast expanse or sliding down into the water.

Lagoa da Esmeralda

One of the largest in the region, featuring the emerald-green hue that gives it its name. It tends to stay quiet even during high season.

Lagoa da Ilha

Named for the sand formations that emerge from the water as the water level drops. A landscape that changes month by month.

Just like in Canto de Atins, the tour takes place in the morning or afternoon, always with stops for swimming. Between one lagoon and the next, what you truly visit is time in its purest form.

How to plan your visit to the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses

Tours depart daily from Atins in 4×4 vehicles driven by accredited guides, which is the only safe and permitted way to travel through the park. The best window to find full lagoons runs from May to September, but even between October and December, several areas maintain good lagoons for swimming, with the added advantage of quieter dunes and ideal winds for kitesurfing.

It is worth booking tours in advance during high season and combining both circuits on different days—one in the morning and another in the late afternoon—to experience the lagoons under different lights. Our concierge team manages all the logistics, including private excursions, breakfast on the dunes, and dinner on the dunes at dusk. You can find a complete overview on our experiences page and more itineraries in the Atins Charme Journal.

The most beautiful lagoon is the one that doesn’t have a name yet

Anyone who visits Lençóis Maranhenses quickly learns that lists are merely a starting point. Between Lagoa Tropical and Gaivota, there are hundreds of water mirrors with no signs or names, waiting for the eyes of those passing by. It is common for the most memorable moment of the trip to happen at a lagoon the guide decided to show on the spot, simply because that day its blue was deeper than all the rest.

It is this blend of vastness and surprise that Grupo Charme Atins translates into hospitality. We know the dunes, the tides, and the seasons, designing each excursion so the park reveals itself at its absolute best. If you would like to discuss dates and itineraries, our team is available on our contact page.

In Lençóis, the water teaches what haste conceals: the most beautiful things happen in their own time.
